Sending my first child to preschool made me so nervous. I wasn’t sure about sending him. I was nervous about the teacher, the other kids, how he would react…basically everything.
People just raved about the preschool we chose but would be right for our child? For the first month or so, I would drop David off at preschool, take younger brother William out for an errand then we would sneak back in.
We called it spying on David because that’s just what we were doing. I wanted to check to see if he was okay and if the teachers were really as nice as they seemed (spoiler alert: they were!). As quietly as could be, we’d sneak up to the preschool door, listen for a while then peak in the window to see what David was doing.
One day on our spy mission, we heard the teacher announce that they were going to do a fire drill. “Oh no!” I thought. If they come out of the classroom, they’ll see us spying at the door.
Quick as a flash, we dashed back out to our car. Then I had the great idea to spy while they were outside during the fire drill. Being as inconspicuous as possible, I drove by with the windows down so we could listen to what was happening.
When we picked David up from preschool that day he asked, “Why were you driving by during our fire drill?” Hmm, I guess not as inconspicuous as I had hoped.
From all that worry and checking in, I learned that the teachers really were just as nice and respectful as they were when parents weren’t around. I found that David enjoyed school and loved to play, do art projects, and make friends.
Now, we’re getting ready to send our second child to preschool for the first time. He’s watched big brother go for the last two years and now he can’t wait to go himself. He knows the teachers, the classroom, and the toys. This transition is going to go much more smoothly than the first time (for both mom and child!).
Luckily we have such a wonderful school with wonderful teachers for our children. The peace of mind and experience from sending my first makes sending my second easier for both me and little brother.
We’re exploring the excitement and nerves that can come with starting a new school year. Right around the middle of summer, we started talking about it and reading picture books about it.
Going along with the characters on their first days of preschool lets my little one gear up for his first day of preschool. He learned from Pete the Kitty how fun it can be. Llama Llama showed him that it’s okay to be nervous. He feels special that the whole family is reading books together about his big transition into preschool.
